Fall is for Food!

Thoreau Foods cereals, toppings, oatmeal’s and smoothie boosters are made from unique, delicious blends of ingredients designed to give your body what it wants and what it needs. They are functional foods.

We often get the question, “How do I use them?” Because our products are so versatile, that’s not exactly an easy question. Here’s the long answer …….

  • Thoreau Foods Cold Cereals - our favorite is to mix 1/3 to 1/2 cup TF Cereal with milk to make loose. Eat right away with fresh fruit or, for optimal flavor and nutrition, let sit in the refrigerator overnight.

  • Thoreau Foods Oatmeals – mix 1/3 cup TF Oatmeal Cereal with 1/3 cup of water. Bring to a boil and simmer 2 – 5 minutes. Add fresh fruit during the simmer or after depending on desired consistency.

  • Thoreau Foods Toppings - Use 1 – 2 tablespoons as a nutritious topping on other cereals (both hot and cold) or mix with yogurt, ice cream, fruit salad, pancake mix, cottage cheese etc. Add omega 3’s, protein and fiber along with great flavor and crunch to your Apple Pies, Apple Crisps, Cookies, Breads, and Muffin recipes. Click for Recipes.

  • Thoreau Foods Smoothie Boosters – Add 1 – 2 tablespoons of
The Omega 3, The Antioxidant , The Cholesterol Killer or The Memory Booster to your
favorite smoothie recipe. You can also use these products just like our toppings to enhance yogurts, cereals, salads, breads and more.

Ingredient of the Month:
Sunflower Seed

The beautiful Sunflower plant, with its rays emanating from its seed studded center, produces the tear shaped sunflower seed which is a great source of Vitamin E, B complex, and the minerals magnesium, selenium, potassium, folate, iron, zinc, copper and calcium. A functional food, the sunflower seed provides an ideal heart healthy fat profile, is naturally high in protein and fiber and low in carbohydrates. The antioxidants found in sunflower seeds help prevent oxidative stress which is associated with heart disease. Data from the Iowa Women’s Health Study showed that vitamin E rich foods such as sunflower seeds were associated with a lower risk of death from stroke while the same was not true for supplemental vitamin E. Other antioxidants found in sunflower seeds include Selenium which works with vitamin E to protect cells from damage that may cause heart disease and Copper which provides antioxidant enzymes to the body. Finally, the “good” fat (mono and polyunsaturated), found in sunflower seeds, along with its high protein low-carb ratio, assists in weight control while offering protection in heart disease.
